About Murska Sobota Castle
Murska Sobota Castle (Soboški grad) stands in a park in the town center, surrounded by oaks about two centuries old. The site appears in documents from 1255 under the name Bel Mura. The present building is a mid-16th-century Renaissance mansion with an inner courtyard and a facade featuring Baroque elements.
Since 1956 the Pomurje Museum (Pomurski muzej Murska Sobota), the regional museum for the entire Mura area, has occupied the castle. The permanent exhibition, installed in 1997, tells the story of people living along the river from prehistory to the end of the 20th century across 14 rooms. It received a special prize from the European Museum Forum in 1999.
The rooms display archaeological finds, traditional trades such as pottery and the milling in river mills, costumes, religious objects of Catholics and Protestants, and the region’s 20th-century history, when it transferred from the Kingdom of Hungary to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1919. The museum also organizes temporary and art exhibitions.
In summer the courtyard and park host concerts and events, and the park is one of the residents’ favorite spots for a walk.
