About Rotunda of St. Nicholas Selo
The Selo rotunda is a small circular-plan church on a low hill beside the village of Selo in the Goričko hills, north of Moravske Toplice. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas, it was built in the 13th century in the Romanesque style and is one of Slovenia’s oldest and most important buildings from that period.
Rotundas were common in Central Europe in the Middle Ages, but few have survived. Selo’s retains its original circular plan, with a small apse, and the simplicity characteristic of the region’s Romanesque structures.
The interior is decorated with 14th- and 15th-century frescoes depicting religious scenes and figures of saints. The paintings, partly worn, have been restored and allow a view of how rural churches looked at the time.
Around the church the landscape is made of gentle hills, woods and vineyards, and the rotunda lies on the route between Moravske Toplice and the interior of Goričko.
