About Church of St. Martin Martjanci
The parish church of Saint Martin stands in the village of Martjanci, which takes its name from the church, between Murska Sobota and Moravske Toplice. It was built in 1392 on the site of an earlier church, as stated by an inscription in the presbytery. It is one of Prekmurje’s principal Gothic works.
The presbytery is vaulted and covered with frescoes by Johannes Aquila, a late 14th-century painter from Radgona, who also painted churches in Velemér (Hungary) and Turnišče. A younger collaborator, known as the master of the apostles of Martjanci, painted some of the figures. The scenes show saints, apostles and episodes from the life of Christ.
The tower rises well above the village’s low houses and can be seen far across the plain. In Martjanci a known collection of religious songs in the local language was compiled in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The church lies on the route between the town and the spa village and pairs well with the other medieval churches of the area.
