About Planica (Planica Nordic Centre)

Planica is an alpine valley opening south from Rateče, about 7 km from Kranjska Gora, under the slopes of the Ponce. The place entered sporting history in 1936, when Austrian Sepp Bradl made the first ski jump over 100 metres there, on the Bloudkova velikanka hill, then the largest in the world. In 1969 the brothers Vlado and Janez Gorišek built the flying hill that bears their name, where several world records were set.

The Planica Nordic centre groups eight jumps of different sizes, cross-country tracks, an underground tunnel for year-round training, a wind tunnel and a museum dedicated to ski jumping and flying. Outside competitions, teams often train there, usually on weekday mornings. In March the valley usually hosts the ski flying World Cup stage, which attracts large crowds.

There is no entrance fee for the centre area; activities are paid separately. These include a chairlift ride to the top of the Gorišek hill, guided tours and a 566-metre zip line that runs close to the jump profile. Further into the valley, the Tamar valley, already within Triglav National Park, is an easy walking destination.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

One to two hours for the jumps and the museum; half a day if you include the zip line, the chairlift ride or the walk to Tamar.

Best time

From May to October for walking, watching training and doing the zip line; in March, during the ski flying World Cup week, the valley is crowded and access follows special rules. Confirm schedules and activity operation before you go.

How to get there

From Rateče, a road of about 3 km leads to the Nordic center; there is no public transport on that stretch. From Kranjska Gora it’s about 7 km by car or along the flat valley bike path to Rateče.

Tip

Combine Planica with Zelenci, which is on the way, and if you have time, hike to the Tamar Valley on the trail that starts by the ski jumps.
