About Zaprice Castle

Zaprice Castle stands on a small hill in the southern part of Kamnik, on the other side of the railway line from Mali grad. The current manor is Renaissance, from the 16th century, and was remodeled in Baroque style in the 18th century. It had many owners over the centuries and today houses the Intermunicipal Museum of Kamnik (Medobčinski muzej Kamnik), created from the city museum founded in 1961.

The exhibitions tell the story of Kamnik, which in the Middle Ages was for a time the main town of Carniola: the mint, bourgeois life, the shepherds of Velika Planina, the region’s industry and the bentwood furniture from the factory that operated in the town. There are also archaeological finds from Mali grad, such as keys, pottery and arrowheads.

In the park around the manor there is a lapidary with ancient stone pieces, and the front lawn opens onto the old town and the Mali grad hill. The museum also manages the birthplace of general and poet Rudolf Maister on Šutna Street, and the Miha Maleš Gallery on Glavni trg square.
