About St. Martin's Church, Laško
The Parish Church of Saint Martin (Cerkev sv. Martina) dominates Aškerčev trg square, in the center of Laško. The building brings together three periods: a Romanesque core, a Gothic renovation and Baroque works. The town’s tourist leaflet presents it as one of the most important Romanesque buildings in the country.
The interior has Gothic vaults and Baroque altars, and the tower rises above the square. Beside the church is a stone lion from the Roman period, a reminder that the region was inhabited since Antiquity, although the Roman name of the place is not known.
The church is the starting point for a circuit of churches around Laško, which passes small Gothic churches with frescoes, the Church of Saint Christopher and the Church of Saint Michael, atop a hill above the town.
The square and surrounding streets form the small historic center, a few steps from the Savinja River and the bridge.
