About Stara grofija
The Stara grofija, the “old counts’ house,” is a Renaissance mansion in Celje’s old town. It was built in the 16th century, partly using stones from the abandoned castle, and features an arcaded courtyard. It is the main seat of the Regional Museum of Celje.
The highlight is the Celje ceiling (Celjski strop), painted around 1600 in the main hall. The painting creates the illusion of an architecture opened to the sky, with balustrades, figures and scenes that seem to continue upward, and is one of Slovenia’s best-known Renaissance works.
The museum’s collections, spread across the rooms, bring together archaeological finds from Celeia, such as Roman stones with inscriptions, art and craft objects, furniture, costumes and documents from the city’s history. There are also temporary exhibitions.
The mansion is a few steps from the Palace of the Princes, and the two visits are usually done together.
