About Princes' Palace Celje
The Palace of the Princes (Knežji dvor) stands in Celje’s old town, on a square named after the Counts of Celje. It was the counts’ residence in the town and later underwent many renovations. Today it is one of the seats of the Regional Museum of Celje (Pokrajinski muzej Celje).
On the upper floors, the permanent exhibition tells the story of the Counts of Celje, who ruled much of the Slovenian lands between 1341 and 1456. One room displays 18 family skulls, identified by scientific studies, in illuminated cases.
In the basement is the exhibition “Celeia, the city under the city” (Celeia – mesto pod mestom). From walkways you can see remains of Roman Celeia: the paving of a main street, parts of houses and a wall, floors and sculptures found during excavations. The Roman city, a municipality since year 45, was among the richest in the region.
The palace is a few steps from the Stara grofija, another museum site, and the two visits are combined on a single ticket.
