About Celje Castle
Celje Castle (Celjski grad), also called the Old Castle (Stari grad), crowns a hill about 2 km southeast of the centre, where the Savinja River enters the Laško valley. The first structure, a Romanesque palace with walls, was built between the 12th and 13th centuries by the Counts of Heunburg (Vovbrški) from Carinthia. In 1333 the castle passed to the lords of Sanneck, who from 1341 became the Counts of Celje.
The counts expanded the walls and turned the site into a large fortress of almost 5,500 m², the largest fortified complex on Slovenian territory. The four-storey watchtower played the main defensive role. It is named after Friderik II: according to tradition, his father Herman II kept him imprisoned there for having secretly married Veronika Deseniška, a woman of lower rank. The story of Friderik and Veronika is the best-known legend of the town.
After the counts died out in 1456, the castle passed to the Habsburgs, lost importance and was abandoned; its stones were reused in other city buildings. Restoration began at the end of the 19th century with the Celje museum society and continues in stages.
The visit follows the courtyards, the walls and Friderik’s tower, with views of Celje and the Savinja valley. In summer, the castle hosts events and performances that recall the counts’ era.
