About Vlkolínec
Vlkolínec is a small village on the slopes of the Veľká Fatra, south of Ružomberok, and has been part of the town since 1882. Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1993, it preserves the layout and buildings of a traditional Carpathian village: more than 45 log houses, with two or three rooms, aligned along a stream.
The houses are painted in pastel tones, set on stone foundations, with wooden roofs. In the middle of the village stands an 18th-century wooden bell tower, and near it a baroque chapel. Some houses operate as small museums, showing interiors and everyday objects; the others are family homes with few inhabitants, or holiday houses.
Car access ends at a parking area below the village, which is explored on foot. The visit is calm and short, but it’s worth walking to the top of the street to see the roofs with the mountains in the background. In season, there may be an entrance fee; check in advance.
