About Betliar Manor House
The Betliar Manor (kaštieľ Betliar) lies in the Slaná valley, northwest of Rožňava, at the foot of the Volovské vrchy mountains. There was once a Bebek family castle on the site, and the core of the building dates from the 15th century. The Andrássy family turned the structure into a hunting residence and renovated it several times; the current two-storey form with four corner towers dates from the 1880 refurbishment.
The Andrássys used the manor until 1944, when they left the region ahead of the advancing Soviet army, and the property was nationalized in 1945. Betliar is the only manor in Slovakia that remained after the war with its original furniture and collections intact. The visit shows halls, bedrooms, hunting trophies, objects brought from travels in Africa and Asia, and the library founded by Leopold Andrássy in 1790, with furnishings and interiors from the same period.
The manor is surrounded by a 57-hectare English-style park, one of the largest historic parks preserved in the country, listed since 1978 in the international register of historic gardens. Among rare trees, ponds and small pavilions there is an artificial waterfall, the largest of its kind in Slovakia.
The manor is part of the Slovak National Museum.
