About Domica Cave
Domica Cave (jaskyňa Domica) is located in the southwest of the Slovak Karst, on the Silica Plateau, near the border with Hungary. Discovered in 1926 and open to visitors since 1932, it is the largest cave of the Slovak Karst and is part of a system of about 25 km that continues, under the border, into the Hungarian Baradla cave. The caves of the Slovak Karst and Aggtelek have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.
The chambers are spacious, and the best known, the Majkov dóm, has cascading lakes called the Roman Baths. The decoration includes onion-shaped stalactites, pagoda-like stalagmites and calcite shields. The cave also has considerable archaeological value, with traces of Neolithic occupation, and is home to 16 species of bats.
There are two guided tours: the short circuit, about 780 m and 45 minutes, and the long circuit, about 930 m and 60 minutes, which includes a boat section on the underground Styx River when there is enough water. In recent years, the river’s low level has made the boat ride less frequent.
Domica has the longest season among Slovak caves, from February to December. Outside, an educational trail of about 2.5 km crosses the karst plateau.
