About Cathedral of the Assumption of Rožňava

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Katedrála Nanebovzatia Panny Márie) is Rožňava’s oldest building. The Gothic church was built at the end of the 13th century and completed around 1304 as the parish church of the mining town. In the 16th and 17th centuries it changed hands between Catholics and Protestants several times.

In 1776 Empress Maria Theresa created the Diocese of Rožňava, and the church became a cathedral. From that period comes the Baroque bell tower, the work of the architect J. Mayer, a native of the town.

The best-known piece inside is the Saint Anne panel with the Virgin and Child, dated 1513, called the Metercia of Rožňava. In the background of the painting the stages of mining work appear in detail, from surveying to ore transport. It is considered the oldest known representation of mining in Central Europe, and the author likely belonged to the circle of Master Paul of Levoča.

The cathedral has good acoustics and hosts organ concerts. It is a few steps from the main square.
