Approximate distances. Check flights and bus, train or boat schedules before you travel.

By train on the Bratislava–Žilina–Košice line, which stops at Poprad‑Tatry station; about 4 hours from Bratislava and a little over an hour from Košice. The Poprad‑Tatry airport, with few flights, is about 4 km from the center. The D1 highway passes south of the town.

How many days

Half a day for the center and Spišská Sobota. Poprad mainly works as a base: those who sleep here take the train into the mountains and return at the end of the day.

When to go

All year. In summer, from June to September, it’s the base for Tatra hikes; in winter, for the ski slopes. The town sits at about 670 meters of altitude, with cold winters and mild summers.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

No. The center and Spišská Sobota are walkable or reachable by city bus, and the electric train takes you to the mountain stations. A car helps for trips to Levoča, Kežmarok or Slovak Paradise in the same day.
