About Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands three blocks from the cathedral, facing La Libertad Park. The idea to build it arose after Ecuador was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, on the initiative of Father Manuel José Proaño. The cornerstone was laid on August 15, 1883, and the church was inaugurated on June 9, 1915.

The plans were drawn by Brother Ramón Lecanda, who modeled it on the Basilica of St. Ignatius of Loyola in Spain. Riobamba residents carried foundation stones from the Chibunga River, and construction progressed with donations from the faithful over three decades.

Outside, the pink dome is striking and visible from many points in the center. On some occasions it is possible to climb up to the dome for views over the city roofs and, on clear days, the surrounding volcanoes; confirm beforehand whether the climb is open.

In front, La Libertad Park has the monument to Jesuit priest Juan de Velasco, a historian born in Riobamba in the 18th century.
