About Monument to Saint Peter

The Monument to San Pedro sits atop Loma de Lluglli, a hill on the edge of Alausí, and can be seen from almost the whole town. The statue is 21 meters tall and was made by Ecuadorian artist Eddie Crespo in 2001, clad with more than one million small ceramic pieces.

San Pedro is Alausí’s patron saint. According to tradition, the place received the name San Pedro de Alausí from Sebastián de Benalcázar on June 29, 1534, the saint’s day. The San Pedro festival, from June 22 to July 2, includes a novena, procession, music and traditional dances, and the devotion moves from the center up to the monument.

The hill serves as a natural viewpoint. From the top you can see the roofs and streets of the center, the train station, the iglesia Matriz with its two towers and the slopes of the Chanchán river valley, where the railway descends.

The climb is short but steep, by streets and stairs from the center. Along the way, Alausí’s old houses, many over a hundred years old, show the wooden balconies typical of the town.
