About Cameron Lake
Cameron Lake is at the end of the Akamina Parkway, a 16 km mountain road that leaves the village of Waterton Park through the Cameron Creek valley. It sits at about 1,660 meters elevation, near the border between Alberta and British Columbia, and the lake’s southern tip lies in Montana, United States, beneath the slopes of Mount Custer.
A flat trail of about 1.6 km follows the west shore through trees beside the lake, and there is a day-use area with canoe and kayak rentals in season. The slopes at the far end of the lake are frequented by grizzly bears, sometimes seen from a distance on the far shore.
On the way, the road passes the historic site of the first oil well in Western Canada. The Akamina Parkway is generally open to vehicles up to the lake from May through early November; in winter the last section is for skiing only.
