About Colony of Avalon
The Colony of Avalon was founded in 1621 at Ferryland by George Calvert, who later became Lord Baltimore and went on to found the colony of Maryland. The settlers built stone houses, a quay, a forge and paved streets in the sheltered cove. Later the colony passed to the family of David Kirke and was attacked by the Dutch and the French in the 17th century.
Since the 1990s archaeologists have excavated the site and found house foundations, the stone street, the quay and hundreds of thousands of artifacts, from tableware to coins. In summer you can often see archaeologists at work.
The interpretation centre displays the finds and explains settlers' lives. Beside it a 17th‑century kitchen has been reconstructed and a garden contains plants cultivated at the time.
