About Battle Harbour

Battle Harbour is on a small island off the southeast coast of Labrador, about 1 hour by boat from Mary’s Harbour. From the late 18th century, merchants from Poole, England established a cod-fishing post there, where fish was salted, dried and shipped to Europe. In the 19th century the village was the main settlement on the Labrador coast.

After a fire in 1930 and the decline of the fishery, residents were moved to the mainland. The wooden buildings were restored in the 1990s: salt and fish warehouses, the wharf, the merchant’s store, the 1852 Anglican church and fishermen’s houses. The ensemble is a national historic district.

The visit includes a guided walk through the village and coastal trails on the island, with icebergs in early summer and whales in the area. It is possible to spend the night in the restored houses.
