About Algonquin Provincial Park
Algonquin Provincial Park was created in 1893 and is Canada’s oldest provincial park. It covers about 7,600 km² of forest of maples, birches, firs and pines, with thousands of lakes and hundreds of kilometres of rivers connected by canoe routes used for centuries by Indigenous peoples and loggers.
Highway 60 crosses the southern part of the park for about 56 km. Along it are the visitor centre, with exhibits and a forest viewpoint, the logging history museum, lakes with canoe rentals and more than a dozen short trails, such as the Lookout Trail, which offers hilltop views, and the Spruce Bog Trail, with boardwalks over a swamp. The park interior is reached only by canoe or on foot.
Moose, beavers, deer and many birds live in the park, and Algonquin wolves have been studied for decades. The park is managed by Ontario Parks and charges a daily entry fee; check the current fee schedule.
