About Thachäl Dhäl and Kluane Lake
Thachäl Dhäl, also called Sheep Mountain, sits at the southern tip of Kluane Lake, beside the Alaska Highway, about 70 km north of Haines Junction. In spring and autumn, Dall sheep with white coats graze on the mountain slopes, sometimes very close to the road.
The visitor centre has spotting scopes aimed at the slopes, exhibits about the sheep and the Slims River, and staff who help locate the animals. Nearby, the Slims River valley leads to the Kaskawulsh Glacier, reached by a long multi-day trail.
Kluane Lake, the largest in the Yukon, stretches about 70 km to the north, with turquoise-blue water, surrounding mountains and viewpoints along the highway.
