About Kingston City Hall and Market Square

Kingston City Hall was built between 1842 and 1844, when the city was the capital of the Province of Canada, and was designed to be large enough to house the parliament. The capital moved before completion, and the building became city hall. It is one of the country’s most striking limestone structures, with a columned portico and a dome visible from afar.

Guided tours in season show the council chamber with stained glass and the old assembly hall. Behind the building is Market Square, home to a farmers’ market since the early 19th century—one of Ontario’s oldest—and in winter an outdoor skating rink.

In front, Confederation Park slopes down to the waterfront, with the dock for sightseeing boats and the marina.
