About Fort Henry National Historic Site

Fort Henry sits atop the Point Henry peninsula, between Kingston Harbour and the Saint Lawrence River. The current limestone fort was built between 1832 and 1837 to protect the naval base and the entrance to the Rideau Canal, at a time of tension with the United States. It was never attacked.

In summer, the Fort Henry Guard, made up of students, recreates the life of British soldiers of 1867 with uniforms, marching, fife and drum music and cannon and musket firings. The barracks, kitchens and magazines can be visited with guides. On summer evenings, the sunset ceremony brings together all the elements and ends with fireworks.

The fort is part of the Rideau Canal World Heritage Site and is administered by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission. The regular season usually runs from late May to early September, with special events in the fall; check dates and the current schedule.
