Prince Edward Island is Canada’s smallest province, in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, separated from the mainland by the Northumberland Strait. The landscape features gentle hills, cultivated fields, fishing villages and a coastline of red sandstone cliffs and sandy beaches—the red color comes from iron in the soil.

Charlottetown, the capital, is called the birthplace of Confederation: in 1864 it hosted the conference that set the stage for Canada’s creation. The downtown area has tree-lined streets, Victorian houses, St. Dunstan’s Basilica and the Confederation Centre of the Arts.

On the north coast is Prince Edward Island National Park, with dunes, beaches and cliffs. In Cavendish, inside the park, stands Green Gables, the house that inspired the novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, published in 1908 and known worldwide.

The island is small and can be driven across in a few hours from end to end, via signed coastal routes. Oysters, mussels and lobster are part of the local table.
