About Gwaii Haanas

Gwaii Haanas covers the southern part of the Haida Gwaii archipelago, comprising about 140 islands and the surrounding marine area. There are no roads or permanent settlements. The area is jointly managed by the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada, under an agreement that is a national reference.

Giant cedar and fir forests descend to the sea, and the waters shelter whales, sea lions, seals and a wide variety of life in the tide pools. In the old villages, such as Hlk'yah GawGa, with a totem pole raised in 2013, and SGang Gwaay, with 19th-century poles still standing and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Haida watchmen welcome visitors and tell the story of each place.

Visits are made on guided boat, kayak or floatplane trips, from one to several days, from May to September. Independent visitors must book and attend an orientation session.
