Fredericton is the capital of the province of New Brunswick, in eastern Canada. The city sits on both banks of the Saint John River, called Wolastoq by the Wolastoqiyik people, about 100 km from the Bay of Fundy. It is a small capital with tree-lined streets, wooden houses and a center you can explore on foot.

The city was founded at the end of the 18th century by Loyalists, settlers who left the United States after independence and remained faithful to the British crown. From that period remain the Garrison District, with the soldiers’ barracks and the officers’ square, the stone Anglican cathedral and the wooden houses on the downtown streets.

On the riverbank are the Legislative Assembly, dating from 1882, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, with works by British and Canadian painters. An old railway bridge has become a pedestrian walkway linking the downtown to the north bank. About 37 km away, the village of Kings Landing recreates life in the river valley in the 19th century, with historic houses and residents dressed in period clothing.

Fredericton works well as a stop between Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, or as a base for exploring the Saint John River valley.
