About Île-aux-Coudres

Isle-aux-Coudres is an island in the St. Lawrence, a few minutes by ferry from Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive, about 20 km from Baie-Saint-Paul. Jacques Cartier passed by in 1535 and named the island for the hazel trees he found.

A roughly 23 km road circles the island; it is flat and popular with cyclists. Along the way are farms, old houses, small procession chapels, the water and windmills of the Moulins de l'Isle-aux-Coudres, and viewpoints over the river with the Charlevoix mountains across the way. At low tide the shores reveal wide bands of rock and mud.

Quebec’s government ferry runs year-round with several crossings per day. The island has inns, restaurants and bicycle rentals.
