About Magnetic Hill
Magnetic Hill is a slope at Moncton’s north exit that became famous in the early 20th century. If you stop a car at the bottom of what appears to be a downhill and put it in neutral, it gives the impression of rolling backward uphill without power.
There is no magnetism: the effect is an optical illusion created by the surrounding terrain, which makes a slight descent appear as an ascent. The site became a tourist attraction, with a marked roadway where you can drive in and signed instructions to do the test.
A recreation area grew up around the slope with a zoo, water park and shops, which operate in their own seasons. The slope charges a fee per car during the season; check the current schedule.
