How many days

One day is enough for the center, the cathedral, a museum and the Japanese Garden. With two days you can see the city's three museums at a relaxed pace and fit in an afternoon at Bokrijk, one train station away. Hasselt is also the base for trips to Tongeren and Genk.

When to go

From spring to autumn the Jardim Japonês is open, and the cherry trees usually bloom in March and April. In October the city usually holds the jenever festivals. In winter the garden closes for maintenance. The Modemuseum and the Het Stadsmus are closed on Mondays.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

No. The center is walkable and the Jardim Japonês is about a 20-minute walk from the Grote Markt. De Lijn buses run around the city, and the train goes to Genk, Bokrijk and Tongeren.

Frequently asked questions

What is jenever?

It is a grain-based spirit distilled and flavored with juniper berries, considered the predecessor of gin. Hasselt has a tradition of distilleries and a museum dedicated to the drink. It is usually served in narrow glasses and sipped slowly.

Is Hasselt a base for Tongeren and Genk?

Yes. Trains to Genk and Tongeren depart from the same station and take about 20 minutes. The city has more hotels and restaurants than its neighbors, so it is usually the most practical choice for those staying several days.

Which day should be avoided for visiting?

On Mondays, when the Modemuseum and the Het Stadsmus are closed. Out of season, between November and the start of spring, the Jardim Japonês is also closed. Check opening days before you go.

Is Hasselt good for shopping?

Yes. The center has pedestrian shopping streets with fashion stores such as Hoogstraat and Demerstraat, and boutiques on the smaller streets around the Grote Markt. The Modemuseum, on Gasthuisstraat, reinforces that reputation.

What is the climate like?

Temperate and humid, with rain spread throughout the year. The European summer, from June to August, has long days and mild temperatures. In winter, from December to February, it is cold and it gets dark in the mid-afternoon. Bring a coat and a rain jacket outside of summer.
