About Richmond River Lighthouse and Lighthouse Beach
The Richmond River lighthouse stands atop the East Ballina headland at the river entrance. The first temporary structure dates from 1866; the current lighthouse, designed by architect James Barnet, was completed in 1879 and first lit in 1880, and it remains operational.
The headland has a lookout over the river mouth, the river breakwaters and the coast. Just below begins Lighthouse Beach, a long stretch facing the open sea, with a patrolled area in season and surfable waves.
On the river side is Shaws Bay, a calm-water lagoon where the first European settlers landed in 1842; today it is popular for swimming with children.
From June to November, humpback whales are sometimes seen offshore from the headland.
