About Asphalt Mines of La Presta
In 1711 natural asphalt deposits were discovered at La Presta in Val-de-Travers. Extraction began the following year and during the 18th century the material was used mainly for medicinal purposes. From the 19th century it was used for road paving, and large-scale mining began in 1873.
The valley's asphalt was exported to cities in several countries, and the galleries once totaled more than 100 km. Miners, horses, trolleys and machines worked there until the mine closed in 1986.
The visit starts in a museum that explains how asphalt formed, its properties and the mining history, with photographs, documents and tools. Afterward a guide leads the group through a section of the galleries, with accounts of miners' lives.
The site café serves ham cooked in asphalt, a specialty linked to the mines.
