About Creux du Van
The Creux du Van is a natural amphitheater of limestone, with vertical cliffs forming a semicircle about 1.4 km wide and a drop of roughly 160 m. It sits on the edge of the Jura, between the Val-de-Travers and Lake Neuchâtel.
Erosion and ice carved the cirque over thousands of years. The floor is covered with rocks and woodland, and above it stretches a plateau of pastures. The area is a nature reserve, with alpine flora and animals like chamois and ibex that can be seen on the slopes.
The most famous trail starts in Noiraigue and climbs through the woods to the rim of the cirque, which is followed by a path offering views over the valley and, on clear days, of the Alps. The return can be made by the same route, making a half-day hike or longer.
The rim does not have continuous protection; the path follows the stone fence of the pastures.
