About Piteå Museum
The old Piteå town hall stands at the back of Rådhustorget square, whose layout follows the plan of the new town drawn up in 1667. The present building, completed in 1838, is the third on the same site, due to fires that struck the town.
The wooden construction, painted yellow, follows the classicism of the Finnish shore of the Gulf of Bothnia, and its exterior cladding imitates the façade of a stone building. It is considered one of the best-preserved examples of this style in Sweden and is protected as a monument.
Since 1980 the building has housed the Piteå museum, the region’s cultural history museum. The exhibitions tell the town’s trajectory in three different locations, from Öjebyn to the river mouth, the fires, trade and everyday life in the north. The large assembly hall, with walls painted to resemble marble, recalls the time when the town hall functioned there.
The museum is a good starting point to understand Piteå before visiting the wooden church and the church village of Öjebyn.
