About Piteå Church

After Piteå was moved from Öjebyn to the river mouth in 1666, residents took years to raise funds and build a church in the new town. The work was completed in 1686.

In 1721, at the end of the Great Northern War, Russian troops ravaging the Gulf of Bothnia coast reached Piteå and burned the town. The church was one of the few buildings that escaped. Local tradition says the soldiers used it as quarters and as a stable, and that is why it was spared.

The church has a cruciform plan and a small tower on the roof. It has been renovated and extended over the centuries but has kept its original character. Inside, the altar retable in 17th-century Renaissance style was bought in 1700 from a church in Stockholm.

Surrounded by a garden in the town centre, the church is considered the oldest wooden church in northern Sweden and has great historical value.
