About Tändsticksmuseet (Match Museum)

Jönköping was for more than a century the match town. In the 19th century the Lundström brothers set up a factory there that perfected the safety match that only ignites when struck on the side of the box, and production reached markets across the world. The town’s name began to appear on matchboxes sold in many countries.

The Tändsticksmuseet occupies the old factory buildings, in a wooden structure from 1848, in the former industrial complex beside the station. Regional tourism presents it as one of the few museums in the world dedicated to matches.

The exhibition shows the machines that cut the wood, dipped the sticks and filled the boxes, and explains factory work, where many women and children were employed. One of the most visited sections is the collection of labels, with designs that varied according to the destination country.

The museum is small and can be seen in a short time, which makes it easy to combine with a walk through the center and along the Vättern waterfront.
