About Jönköpings läns museum (Jönköping County Museum)

The Jönköpings läns museum is the county museum and tells the history of the Jönköping region, in the north of Småland, from prehistory to recent times. It is in the center of town, near Lake Munksjön.

The highlight is the John Bauer collection (1882–1918), born in Jönköping. Bauer became known for illustrations in the series Bland tomtar och troll, in which dark forests, trolls and princesses created a vision of Swedish folklore recognized beyond the country. The museum gathers his drawings, watercolors and paintings.

Other rooms address the art and cultural history of the county, with objects, costumes and temporary exhibitions. The museum also remembers figures linked to the town, such as the writer Viktor Rydberg, born in Jönköping.

It’s a good visit to understand the region before heading to Gränna, Visingsö and the Småland interior.
