About Grenna Museum – Andréexpeditionen Polarcenter
Salomon August Andrée was born in Gränna in 1854. An engineer, he planned to reach the North Pole in a hydrogen balloon and departed in 1897 from the island of Danskøya, in the Svalbard archipelago, with two companions, Nils Strindberg and Knut Frænkel. The balloon came down on the ice a few days later, and the fate of the three was only clarified in 1930, when the remains of their camp were found on the island of Kvitøya.
The Grenna Museum – Andréexpeditionen Polarcenter tells this story with objects from the expedition, photographs developed from the films found in the ice, and reconstructions. The museum presents itself as holding the largest polar collection in Sweden.
Other rooms cover the history of Gränna, founded in the 17th century by the Brahe family, and Amalia Eriksson, the widow who began making polkagris in the town in 1859.
The museum is on the square, on the main street, which makes it easy to combine a visit with a walk through the shops and the port.
