About Brahehus ruins
Brahehus was built in the 17th century by Per Brahe the Younger, one of the most powerful men in Sweden at the time, who received Visingsö and the surrounding lands as a county. He founded Gränna and ordered residences to be erected on the island and on the slope above the lake.
The hillside castle was used for receptions, never truly inhabited, and was destroyed by a fire in the 18th century. Stone walls remain, standing out on the cliff top and visible from afar to those passing on the E4.
The main attraction is the view: from the top you can see Vättern across its full width, the island of Visingsö and, on clear days, the lake’s western shore. The site has a picnic area and is a common stop for travellers on the motorway.
For those based in Gränna, Brahehus lies a few kilometres to the north and complements a visit to the town founded by the same family.
