When to go for the festivals in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom brings together four nations — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — and each has its own dates alongside events common to the whole country. There are celebrations rooted in ancient rural and religious calendars, and modern festivals of music, theatre and literature that have become traditions.

In Scotland the year begins with Hogmanay, New Year’s Eve celebrated with street parties, music and fireworks, and in January Burns Night honours the poet Robert Burns with supper and poetry. From spring through late summer Scottish towns and villages host the Highland Games, with tests of strength, bagpipes and Highland dances.

In Wales the eisteddfods gather music, poetry and competitions in the Welsh language. In March St Patrick’s Day is celebrated in Northern Ireland, and in London events range from the monarch’s official birthday military parade in June to the Notting Hill Carnival, a Caribbean-rooted street party on the late‑August bank holiday.

August is also festival season in Edinburgh, when the Scottish capital simultaneously hosts theatre, music, literature and arts festivals. In autumn Bonfire Night on November 5 lights bonfires and fireworks across the country, and the year ends in Scotland with another Hogmanay.

Because the weather can change quickly in any season, many outdoor events require a coat and rain cover even in summer. Dates for several events vary each year; check the calendar before you travel.
