About Oeiras Waterfront Promenade

The Oeiras Seafront, which locals call the 'paredão', runs along the coast between Praia da Torre to the west and Paço de Arcos Beach to the east. It was built in phases: the first section, between the Fort of São Julião da Barra and Santo Amaro Beach, was completed in 2002, and the next section, up to Paço de Arcos, in 2009. Away from the traffic of the coastal road, it’s a popular weekend activity for residents of the Lisbon area for walking, running, and cycling.

Along the route you’ll pass Praia da Torre, Praia da Laje and Santo Amaro de Oeiras Beach, the marina, the ocean pool and a series of small forts that were part of the defense of the Tagus estuary, such as the Forte de Santo Amaro do Areeiro, finished in 1649, and the Forte de São João das Maias.

At the western tip stands the Forte de São Julião da Barra, the largest coastal fortification in Portugal, built from the 16th century to protect the mouth of the Tagus. The fort is not open for regular visits, but it can be seen from Praia da Torre and the seafront. In the middle of the river opposite is the Forte do Bugio, with its lighthouse. To the east, the promenade reaches the old core of Paço de Arcos, with traditional houses.
