About Barcarena Gunpowder Factory
The Barcarena Gunpowder Factory is located inland in the municipality of Oeiras, in the valley of the Barcarena stream, which divides the complex into two parts: the Lower Factory and the Upper Factory. Black gunpowder production began there in the 16th century and continued for more than four centuries, powered by the stream’s water turning the mills. The factory became the kingdom’s main one, known as the Real Fábrica da Pólvora.
Activity ceased permanently in 1988. Oeiras City Hall bought the complex in the 1990s and restored the buildings, gardens and hydraulic systems, transforming the site into a cultural hub with exhibition spaces, green areas, a playground, a restaurant and a café.
The Black Gunpowder Museum occupies the building commissioned by António Cremer and inaugurated in 1729, which originally housed four grinding mills. The museum reconstructs one of those mills, with limestone millstones, and explains the stages of black powder manufacture and the factory’s history. The same complex houses the Casas do Salitre, used for exhibitions.
