About Loulé Municipal Market
The Municipal Market of Loulé was inaugurated in June 1908. The building follows the neo-Arab revivalist style that was fashionable in Portugal around the turn of the 20th century: it has a rectangular plan, four pavilions at the corners topped by red domes, and doors and windows with horseshoe arches. It is one of the most photographed buildings in the town and one of Loulé’s symbols.
Inside, the market continues to function as a supply market. The stalls sell fresh fish, fruit and vegetables.
The building was restored in 2007, preserving the façade and the domes. The market also opens on Sundays, and stall activity is usually higher in the morning. On Saturdays, the fair spills into the surrounding streets with stalls from local producers, and the center becomes livelier.
