About Church of Saint Clement (Mother Church of Loulé)

The Mother Church of Loulé, dedicated to Saint Clement, was erected in the second half of the 13th century, shortly after the Christian conquest, on the site of the city’s mosque. It is one of the examples of Gothic architecture in southern Portugal, with stone arches and columns.

Over the centuries the church received additions. In the 16th century side chapels in the Manueline style were built, with decorated vaults and portals. The bell tower beside the church is identified by local historians as the adapted former mosque tower.

The church was classified as a National Monument in 1924. Opposite it lies the Jardim dos Amuados, a small tree-lined square with benches, one of the meeting points of Loulé’s centre.
