The state
Get to know Coahuila
Coahuila is located in northeastern Mexico, on the border with Texas. It is the third largest state in the country, almost entirely occupied by the Chihuahua desert and dry mountain ranges, with blue-water oases and vineyard valleys.
Saltillo, the capital, has the Santiago cathedral, with a baroque façade, and the Desert Museum, featuring dinosaur fossils found in the state and plants and animals of the desert. The city is known for sarapes, striped wool blankets in bright colors.
Parras de la Fuente, a Pueblo Mágico, lies in a spring-fed valley where grapes have been grown since the 16th century; it is home to the oldest winery in the Americas, founded in 1597. In Cuatro Ciénegas, in the middle of the desert, natural pools of blue, crystal-clear water, such as the Poza Azul, shelter bacteria and species found only there; the area is protected, and some pools are reserved for research.
Torreón, in the west, is part of the Comarca Lagunera and features the Cristo de las Noas atop a hill. On the table, roasted kid (cabrito) and Saltillo’s pulque bread.
When to go
From October to April days are usually mild and dry, with cold nights from December to February. From May to September it is very hot in the desert. Parras’s grape harvest is usually celebrated in August. Coahuila is 3 hours behind Brasília; border municipalities move their clocks forward from March to November.
