About National Jenever Museum
The Nationaal Jenevermuseum occupies a former distillery on the Lange Haven, one of the canals in central Schiedam. Opened in 1996, it traces the drink that enriched the city from malted grain to the bottle, including moutwijn, the malt distillate used in traditional jenever.
The museum has three parts. The exhibition displays tools, bottles and the daily life of the distillers. In the De Gekroonde Brandersketel distillery, which still operates in the old way, visitors see copper stills and barrels in use.
The third part is the De Walvisch windmill, a few minutes’ walk away, which belongs to the museum. There you can see how grain was milled for the industry and why Schiedam’s windmills were built so tall.
The windmill visit is ticketed separately. The museum offers optional tastings; check current formats and conditions. Visitors who do not drink alcohol can take the tour normally, and tastings are optional.
