About Schiedam Windmills
Schiedam became known for its giant windmills. Because the city was surrounded by tall distillery and warehouse buildings, the windmills were built on the old walls and constructed at great height so their sails would clear the rooftops and catch the wind. Hence the local nickname reuzen, the giants.
They ground grain for the city’s jenever distilleries. Several were lost over time, but the remaining group forms a route you can walk along the Westvest and Noordvest canals outside the center.
De Noord, from 1803, is the tallest of the historical distillers’ mills at over 33 meters. De Drie Koornbloemen, from 1770, is the oldest surviving distillers’ mill. De Walvisch, affiliated with the Nationaal Jenevermuseum, can be visited inside, and some others still grind grain for bakeries and distilleries.
The windmills can be seen from outside at any time. In season, canal boat tours pass by them, and the view from the water shows their height well.
