About Pas de Roland
The Pass of Roland is in the commune of Itxassou, a few kilometers south of Cambo-les-Bains, where the Nive runs tightly between the mountains. It is a large rock pierced by an opening, next to the road and the river.
Legend says that Roland, nephew of Charlemagne, opened the passage when crossing the valley with the army in 778, striking the rock with the Durandal sword or with his horse’s hoof. Other versions say the opening was used by shepherds to pass with their flocks. Historians treat the story as legend.
The site is also a lovely section of the Nive gorge, with green water, rocks and forest. Paths lead from there up the slopes and to Mount Artzamendi for those who want to walk further.
Access is free. A narrow road runs beside the rock, so be careful of traffic.
