Cities to discover today

Reims
Grande Leste · Champagne

Reims

Reims is the largest city in the Champagne and the gateway to the region, 45 minutes by TGV from Paris. At the Cathédrale Notre-Dame nearly all the kings of France were crowned, and the Basilique Saint-Remi houses the tomb of the bishop who baptized Clovis. The city also has the Porte de Mars, a Roman arch, the Musée de la Reddition, where World War II in Europe ended, and champagne houses such as Pommery, Taittinger and Mumm, with cellars open to visits by reservation.

Saint-Émilion
Nova Aquitânia · Bordéus and the vineyards

Saint-Émilion

Saint-Émilion is a medieval village of limestone on a hill surrounded by vineyards, about 40 km from Bordéus. The Jurisdição de Saint-Émilion, comprising the village and seven other communes, has been a World Heritage Site since 1999 as a wine-growing landscape. In the centre are the Église monolithe, a church carved into the rock, the Tour du Roy, the Collégiale with its cloister and the Cloître des Cordeliers. Around them, wine estates receive visitors by reservation.

Ajaccio
Córsega · Córsega

Ajaccio

Ajaccio is the capital and largest city of Córsega, on the island's west coast. Napoleon was born here, and the Maison Bonaparte, the cathedral where he was baptized and the Palais Fesch tell that story. The centre brings together Place Foch, the market and the harbour. At the mouth of the gulf are the Pointe de la Parata and the Îles Sanguinaires, and about a morning's drive away are the Calanques de Piana and the Golfe de Porto, with boats to the Scandola reserve.

Chamonix
Auvérnia-Ródano-Alpes · French Alps

Chamonix

Chamonix lies in the valley at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest point of the Alps at 4,807 meters, near the borders with Switzerland and Italy. From the town center departs the Aiguille du Midi cable car, at 3,842 meters, and the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace, the largest glacier in France. On the other side of the valley, Brévent and Flégère face the massif, and the trail to Lac Blanc starts from Flégère. In the center is the Musée du Mont-Blanc; nearby, in Saint-Gervais, is the Tramway du Mont-Blanc.

Annecy
Auvérnia-Ródano-Alpes · French Alps

Annecy

Annecy sits at the outlet of Lac d'Annecy, a glacial lake surrounded by mountains, in the department of Haute-Savoie. The vieille ville has canals from the Thiou river, colorful houses and the Palais de l'Isle, a former prison on a small island. Above are the Château d'Annecy and the Basilique de la Visitation; on the lakeside are the Jardins de l'Europe and the Pont des Amours. Nearby are the Gorges du Fier, Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard and the Semnoz.
