About St. George Street

St. George Street has been the main street of Saint Augustine’s historic downtown since the Spanish period. It begins at the City Gate, the old city entrance, with two coquina pillars from 1808, and runs south to Plaza de la Constitución, the central square.

The stretch is closed to cars and lined with stone and wooden houses, some reconstructed in the colonial style, with porches and inner courtyards. Shops, cafés and restaurants occupy many of them. Near the city gate, the Colonial Quarter recreates life in the Spanish town of the 18th century, with craftsmen and demonstrations. The street also includes the wooden school considered the oldest in the country.

On the cross streets, such as Aviles Street, one of the oldest, and Cathedral Place, you’ll find galleries, the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Augustine and historic houses.
