About Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens
The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens opened in 1961 on the grounds of Ninah Cummer’s home. Ninah Cummer was an art collector who left the property and her works to establish a museum. The original house was demolished and the museum building was constructed in its place, but the family gardens were preserved.
The collection spans several centuries and includes European and North American paintings, sculpture, Asian art, and one of the largest collections of Meissen porcelain outside Germany. There are rooms devoted to Florida art and temporary exhibitions.
The gardens, on the banks of the St. Johns River, feature English, Italian, and Japanese designs, with fountains, pergolas, and an old oak with huge branches. They have been damaged by river floods and subsequently restored.
